I was recently invited to Madrid to see a new and exciting technique called ‘Aquablation’. I met with one of the leading European BPH surgeons, who presented the recently published results on this new procedure, as well as witnessed him performing it on some of his own patients. This minimally invasive technique uses a combination of cystoscopy and real-time ultrasound guided waterjet ablation of the prostate tissue. As each procedure is tailored to the individual’s prostate, and there is no heat involved, the surrounding tissues are preserved. It is now approved by NICE as a suitable alternative to the standard ‘TURP’ operation. I am now in discussions with Duchy Hospital about setting up this service…watch this space!
